When Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Turkey, he left both of his phones with his fiancee, and paired his new Apple watch with a Turkish wifi network, so the watch was recording what happened. That is how Turkey and the CIA knew about the murder. When the murderers realized the watch was recording, they tried to use Khashoggi's fingerprint to turn it off, but Apple hadn't implemented that feature yet.
